Stress management isn't about
doing less. It's about doing differently.

Chronic stress is usually maintained by a combination of cognitive patterns (catastrophizing, all-or-nothing thinking), behavioral patterns (overcommitting, avoiding rest), and insufficient regulation skills. At GN Counseling and Wellness, we work on all three.

We don't just teach breathing techniques. We build comprehensive DBT and CBT-based skill sets for managing stress in the moment, changing the thinking that amplifies it, and making behavioral changes that reduce the load at the source.

Regulate in the moment
DBT distress tolerance and mindfulness skills give you something to do when stress spikes, before it spirals.
Change the thinking
Much of chronic stress is amplified by cognitive patterns, catastrophizing, perfectionism, black-and-white thinking. CBT-based work targets these directly.
Reduce the load at the source
Behavioral change, like setting limits and restructuring commitments, is also part of the work. Not just coping with stress, but creating less of it.

What stress management therapy
actually involves.

Structured, skills-forward, and faster than you might think.

01
Map your stress system
We identify your specific triggers, your amplifying thoughts, your avoidance behaviors, and what's keeping the whole system running.
02
Build a regulation toolkit
DBT distress tolerance and mindfulness skills, practiced in session and applied between sessions.
03
Restructure the thinking
CBT-based work on the cognitive patterns that turn normal demands into chronic stress.
04
Change the behavior
Limits, commitments, rest, and how you structure your time, we make practical changes that reduce the load, not just your response to it.

Questions about stress management therapy.

It's a form of therapy, typically more structured and skills-focused than open-ended talk therapy. Many clients find it more actionable and faster to produce visible results.
Weekly sessions are most effective, especially early on. Virtual sessions reduce the time commitment significantly, no commute, no waiting room, flexible scheduling.
Stress is typically driven by external circumstances. Anxiety disorders involve internal processes that persist even when external circumstances improve. They often overlap, and both respond well to CBT and DBT-based approaches.
Not necessarily. Many clients see significant improvement through therapy alone. If medication might be helpful, we'll discuss it and can refer you for evaluation.
Therapy for stress, anxiety, and related concerns is covered by most plans. GN Wellness is in-network with Aetna, Optum, Anthem BCBS, United Healthcare, Oxford, and Oscar.
