Depression Therapy

Depression lies.
Therapy helps you see that.

Depression doesn't just make you sad, it tells you things won't get better, that you're the problem, that trying is pointless. At GN Counseling and Wellness, we treat depression by challenging those stories and building the behavioral and emotional tools to interrupt the cycle.

Depression isn't a character flaw. It's a pattern we can interrupt.

At GN Counseling and Wellness, we treat depression as something that has a shape, specific thought patterns, behavioral tendencies, and often underlying experiences that keep it in place. Understanding that shape is the first step to changing it.

We use CBT to identify and challenge depressive thinking, behavioral activation to interrupt the withdrawal cycle, and psychodynamic exploration when the roots go deeper. The goal is not just symptom relief, it's building a life you actually want to show up for.

Challenge depressive thinking
Depression distorts how you see yourself, the world, and the future. CBT-based work helps you identify those distortions and replace them with more accurate, workable perspectives.
Interrupt the withdrawal cycle
Depression makes you want to pull back from the things that usually give you energy. Behavioral activation helps you act against that pull, and rebuild momentum.
Address the roots
Sometimes depression is connected to loss, unresolved grief, or patterns from earlier in life. We make space for that deeper work when it's relevant.

How we actually treat it.

Our approach to depression is active and structured, not passive listening.

01
Understand your pattern
Early sessions map your specific depression, its triggers, its thought patterns, what keeps it in place.
02
Activate, don't wait to feel better
Behavioral activation gets you moving toward meaningful activities before motivation returns, because motivation follows action, not the other way around.
03
Challenge the narrative
Cognitive work identifies the distorted thinking depression produces and builds more accurate, less punishing ways of seeing yourself and your situation.
04
Build for the long term
We develop a relapse prevention plan so you have a roadmap for when depression tries to creep back in.

Common questions about depression therapy.

Depression is typically characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, and symptoms lasting two weeks or more. But you don't need a diagnosis to benefit from support. If how you're feeling is interfering with your life, that's worth addressing.
Not necessarily. Therapy is often highly effective on its own. If medication might be helpful, especially for more severe depression, we'll discuss it openly and can refer you for a psychiatric evaluation.
Many people see meaningful improvement in 12–16 sessions. Some people benefit from longer-term work, especially when depression is connected to deeper patterns. We set goals together and track progress throughout.
Yes. Virtual therapy for depression is as effective as in-person, and for many clients, the reduced friction of virtual sessions helps them show up more consistently, which matters a lot in depression treatment.
GN Wellness is in-network with Aetna, Optum, Anthem BCBS, United Healthcare, Oxford, and Oscar. Most plans cover mental health treatment. We verify your benefits before your first session.
